Dining Out: Crema Cafe

Tonight I met one of my favorite dining out companions for dinner in Harvard Square. She works in the area and asked if I had ever been to Crema Cafe. Despite frequenting other Harvard Square spots (Border Cafe, Cambridge 1, Tory Row, Grendel's Den, Grafton Street, Upstairs on the Square) I had yet to set foot in Crema.

Crema Cafe is located right in the heart of Harvard Square next to Hidden Sweets on Brattle Street. The Cafe has a few outdoor tables and a surprisingly expansive indoor space. The weather tonight was absolute perfection and every outdoor table was taken. We walked inside and I was immediately put at ease by the cool, bohemian vibe of the space.

The entire right wall of the Cafe is exposed brick (which I find so raw yet elegant). There were a variety of seating options - two bars with stools, high top tables, small two person tables and tables for large groups (hello, Harvard study groups!). There is seating on the first level and a staircase that leads to a loft level that overlooks the whole place.

You stand in line to order from the menu which is written on chalkboards above the registers. On the recommendation of my date (she eats here several times a week) I ordered a vegetarian sandwich that came on wheat bread with sweet potato, avocado, green apple, caramelized onions, sprouts and hummus. Sounds like a hodge podge, tastes like a flavor symphony! I was blown away by the bold and fresh taste of this odd mix of ingredients. Huge thumbs up!

My date ordered a chicken, spinach and artichoke sandwich that came on homemade focaccia. Hello, yum. We both ordered a side of house made sweet potato chips which disappeared in an instant. To wash down our incredible sandwiches I had the hibiscus spice tea and she had the Moroccan mint tea. Both were fantastically brisk!

While we were waiting in line to order our dinner, I had noticed the incredible spread of desserts behind the counter. After two long work days we both decided we could splurge and hatched a plan to split two different desserts. We ordered the German chocolate cupcake and the oatmeal cookie.

The cupcake was a fluffy chocolate cake topped with a rich, sugary frosting. When I took the first bite I could feel my mouth turn upward in a blissful smile.

The oatmeal cookie was packed with dried cherries, chocolate chips and walnuts. The cookie was the perfect texture - baked on the outside, chewy on the inside. I could have eaten 10 more sitting right there.

If I were rating, I would give Crema Cafe a perfect 10 out of 10. A beautiful space, indoor and outdoor seating, fantastic sandwich, salad and soup options, unique hot and cold drinks, and a dessert offering that would make any sweet tooth ache. On your next trip to Harvard Square, be sure to make a stop at Crema.

Shop: Flowers in May

Each day one of my favorite websites, The Frisky, sends me a daily email called "Today's Crave." The message I received today included an adorable invitation sample for a BBQ invite. I am currently planning a 4th of July BBQ and was immediately struck by the vibrant colors and playful design of these cards:

The invites are designed by a stationary company called Flowers in May. I explored their site a bit and also found this fun invite for a pizza party! I love it so much I might plan a pizza party just so I can mail these out. How cute is that checked envelope?

I am a total stationary hoarder and I compulsively buy thank you notes, birthday cards, holiday cards and now apparently, event invites!

Visit the Flowers in May website to see their full stationary offerings.

New Discovery: Huge

Last night ABC Family premiered its new summer series Huge. I learned about the show in Entertainment Weekly (my pop culture bible) and set the DVR immediately.

Huge follows a group of teenagers at a weight loss camp for the summer. The show's star, Nikki Blonsky of Hairspray fame, plays Will (short for Wilhelmina) who has been forced to attend this camp by her parents. She is surrounded by people who are not only willing to diet and exercise, but are looking to this program to be their catalyst - a fact that only annoys Will further.

There is the usual cast of characters:

The girl with the beautiful face who can't seem to lose her desired weight (played by David Hasselhoff's daughter, Hayley):

The hyper, drill sergeant, fitness coordinator (hello, Heavyweights flashback!):

And the sexy male counselor (Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, anyone?). The show's resident hottie is played by Zander Eckhouse, son of James Eckhouse, Beverly Hills 90210's Jim Walsh!

While the cast of characters aren't original, the show is surprisingly poignant. Anyone who has been plagued with self esteem issues will appreciate the honest portrayal of young, insecure, high school students struggling to love and accept themselves while under this pressurized microscope. The sincere nature of the show is thanks to one of the executive producers, Winnie Holzman, who was behind the critically acclaimed primetime shows My So-Called Life and Once and Again.

Huge airs Monday nights at 9:00 pm eastern time on ABC Family.

The Bachelorette: Tumultuous in Turkey

This week my usual Bachelorette viewing buddy is out of town so I'm flying solo while watching episode 6. The previews at the close of last week show a suitor exiting the show after his true colors are revealed. Can you say: girlfriend back home? Ouch, Ali.

Below my rants and raves on this week's installment:

- Ali and the men arrive in Turkey. Shortly there after Chris Harrison arrives at Ali's hotel room door with a message from a past female contestant, Jessie.
- Jessie's phone is ringing and ringing and ringing. Poor planning producers! Shouldn't Jessie be waiting anxiously by the phone for this call?
- Rated R has a girlfriend at home in Toronto. SHOCKER! Not.
- So the producers decide to put Rated R's girlfriend on the phone. The girlfriend who didn't feel the need to say anything until episode 6. Mmm hmmm.
- Wait wait wait. So the girlfriend helped Rated R take his headshots, buy suits and NOW she is speaking up. Bogus. Get off my television.
- Chris Harrison reveals a photo of Rated R and the girlfriend on his iPhone. You know, he just got that right before he knocked on Ali's door.

- Ali exposes Rated R and what does he do? Grabs his overnight bag and walks out. He tries to walk away from Ali and through the hotel restaurant when the waiter waves him away. "Door locked for YOU!" He winds up climbing through a fountain to get as far from Ali as he can. Wow.

- Ali says "When you get caught in a lie, you need time to collect your thoughts and get your story straight. That's why Justin needed to get away from me. He needed to get his story straight." So true.
- Watching Rated R squirm is painful. Watching Ali rip into him - superb.
- As Rated R walks away the show plays voicemails he left for Jessica. I am cringing with embarrassment for everyone involved.

- Ty gets the one-on-one date via a card card that reads "Let's get steamy." Hm, Bachelorette signature hot tub?
- Ali has bandaids on the back of her ankles? Too many uncomfortable shoes, apparently. Bandaids = not sexy.
- After rubbing each other up and down at the Turkish bath, Ali and Ty shower, change and sit down to dinner. Ali dives in asking about Ty's divorce. Now we're talkin'!
- Ty gets the rose and he and Ali dance together in the street. Who really does that? Answer: no one.

- Group date time! Hottie overload. Chris L, Kirk, Roberto and Craig.
- Four oil covered Turkish men arrive with a band proceeding them. Apparently they are olive oil wrestlers. Of course!
- Chris L, "Usually what I do with olive oil is, I dip bread in it or cook asparagus on the grill with it. I don't wrestle in it." Ha!
- The suitors lose to the Turkish wrestlers. To win one-on-one time with Ali, they will wrestle each other. Craig says, "The problem is, the other guys here are all athletes. I'm not like that. I'm a lawyer. I fight with words generally. That's like, my job." Ha!
- Craig wins! Victory for non-athlete men everywhere!

- Ali and Craig take a boat to an island and share champagne and dessert in a private tower. Craig is being unbelievably sweet. I wish I could swap places with Ali!
- Fireworks! What a dream date!
- Still no kiss? He's behind.

- On their one-on-one date Ali and Frank explore the Bazaar (or as we call it in Israel, the Shuk). Frank says, "I could watch Ali shop all day." Um, Frank. Are you my dream man?
- Ali and Frank float together in the water of the Basilica. I think it feels like a tomb, hardly romantic. But they seem to be digging it.
- Franks gets a rose! Onto the final five.

- Ali tells Chris she doesn't want a cocktail party, she already knows who she wants to cut this week. I am predicting Craig. He just got a late start.
- And I was right! The remaining roses go to Roberto, Chris and Kirk.
- Ali asks Craig if she can walk him out. All Ali can manage to say is, "I think there just wasn't any romance between us."
- Craig gets misty in the limo ride. Awww.

- Next stop, Lisbon, Portugal! Jealous!
- Previews: Ali meets Frank and Roberto's families! Roberto packs for Tahiti. Frank arrives in Tahiti and says, "I am going to do something that is going to hurt." What? It seems he is going to break up with Ali! What a crazy preview!

Meet Me at the Melting Pot

Back in April I went with two girlfriends to Melting Pot in downtown Boston for a birthday celebration dinner. I blogged about the fantastic meal and soon found myself chatting on Twitter with the Melting Pot's Director of Marketing as a result. When she decided to host a foodie "tweet up" this month she was kind enough to invite me!

For those who are not familiar, a tweet up is a meet up (get it, tweet up, meet up) for people who share a common interest on the micro-blogging site Twitter. This commonality can range from Brighton residents, to Whole Foods addicts, to beer connoisseurs, or in this case, foodies!

We were invited to the Melting Pot's location in Boston's Park Plaza to meet the Director of Marketing in person and enjoy some fondue. I arrived at 6:00 pm on the dot and met several Twitter friends I'd be following for months and many of whom write blogs I read daily. It was so fantastic to meet all these inspiring people in person and share our love of food!

The spread for the evening included cheese and chocolate fondues of every iteration. The cheese offerings included: Swiss, Fiesta Cheese, Spinach and Artichoke, and my favorite, the Wisconsin Trio, which has blue cheese. Is there such a thing as too much blue cheese? I think not. Each cheese fondue was served with carrots, celery, cauliflower, green apples, bread cubes and corn chips for dipping.

Catering to my veracious sweet tooth were dessert fondues including Cookies n Cream, Pecan Turtle, Pure Dark Chocolate and Bananas Foster (which I did not taste, as you all know I don't feel fruit is dessert. That's breakfast. Come on now). The chocolate fondues were complimented by pieces of brownie, rice krispie treats, strawberries and marshmallows for dipping. In a word: heaven.

In addition to the fondue there were also representatives from the Still River Winery providing samples of Apfel Eis, their apple ice wine. I had never had any flavor of ice wine and I have to say, it was quite delightful! It tastes like a deliciously sugary, cold, apple juice. Perfect for sipping with dessert. The best part? The winery is local! You can visit Still River Winery in Harvard, MA.

One of the most fun benefits of attending an event with a group of bloggers is reading all of their posts about the event afterward! Check out the reviews below:

The Bachelorette: Icy Hot

Tonight my weekly viewing buddy and I sat down for the newest installment of Ali's worldwide journey for love. This week's destination: Iceland! Below our rants and raves:

- The boys compete for the one-on-one date with Ali by writing a love poem.
- Everyone looks cold. Shivering. Teeth chattering. Rubbing their hands together.
- Cute poem from Craig R.
- While Kasey reads his poem, from the couch, "I hope he falls into the erupting volcano."
- Chris N.'s poem. Um. What?
- Kirk's poem - Root beer eyes? Really?
- In the post-commercial preview, Kirk doesn't want to talk about his dating history. From the couch, "What if he has never had a girlfriend? What if he killed his last girlfriend? Or impregnated her? Bets? Anyone?"
- As Kirk diverts the dating question, from the couch, "Left at the altar? Maybe?" We really want to know!
- Kirk tells Ali he was sick for years from mold and asbestos in his college house. Wow. We were way off.
- On the group date, Chris L.'s horse hates him. Hilarious.
- Justin gets his cast off and instead gets a boot that is exactly the same size. Then he puts his crutches in the trash. Because that is what people do with crutches.
- For the record, this group date in the underground cave = my worst nightmare.
- At the Blue Lagoon, the group date rose is frozen. FROZEN. And they are all in bathingsuits.
- Time for the two-on-one date. Kasey has a Burberry scarf. Hm.
- Ali has to fly again? You would think as the star of the show, she could say, "I have a fear of flying. No planes." In fact, she is flying around the world with these guys! What gives?
- Ice cave! I have always wanted to go to the Ice Hotel! Wearing a fur coat, of course.
- Kasey and Ali have alone time. He's taking off his gloves. He's reaching for his sleeve . . .
- Kasey reveals the tattoo and Ali is speechless. She can't even hide her shock and horror.
- Ali gives the rose to Rated R and Kasey reacts in a surprisingly calm manner. I am waiting for him to fling himself into the mouth of the volcano.
- At the cocktail party, Kirk is wearing his Iceland sweater. Dorky yet cute.
- Craig R. draws a fake tattoo on his wrist to make Ali laugh. Eh. Lame.
- Chris N. How did you make it to Iceland? You're funny? You love Mexican food? Wow, riveting.
- Kirk and Frank commenting on Ali and Chris N.'s body language, "They may do brunch once a year. Just to catch up." Ha!
- I feel like Chris L. and Ali have the same conversation over and over again every time they are alone.
- Ali tells Roberto, "Outside of this, I would never have come up to you. I would have thought you were too hot for me." Um. YEAH.
- Since Ali didn't wear any yellow this week, they put yellow flowers next to the photos of each guy in her "deliberation" room.
- Welp. Chris N. is going home. Probably to make some fajitas.
- We are down to Ty, Kirk, Justin, Frank, Roberto, Chris L. and Craig.
- Next stop: Istanbul, Turkey!
- In the previews: one-on-one dates for Ty and Frank, a wrestling duel for the boys, and someone leaves the show after their true, girlfriend-having colors are revealed. Guesses?

Movie Musings: Toy Story 3

This afternoon I went with a girlfriend to see Toy Story 3. In the days leading up to the film's release I was reading as many reviews as I could get my hands on. It has been 15 years since the first installment of the Toy Story franchise premiered and I wanted to hear why the critics think I should see this third creation all these years later.

To say the reviews have been overwhelmingly positive would be an understatement. Film critics who usually berate and dissect films that I have adored were literally lulled into a state of bliss and nostalgia by this film. On Friday, Toy Story 3 had a rating of 100% on the notoriously negative movie review site Rotten Tomatoes.

One of my favorite critics, Owen Gleiberman of Entertainment Weekly, said in his review, "Walking into this second sequel, I knew what I wanted: to be carried away, yet again, by the antic charm of Woody the noble, common-sense cowboy (voiced by Tom Hanks with his trademark acerbic snap), the irresistibly self-adoring action figure Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen), the cranky Mr. Potato Head (Don Rickles), the mouse-that-roared dinosaur Rex (Wallace Shawn), the squeaky-cool alien LGMs, and the rest of the gang. I yearned to be dazzled and touched by the speed and repartee, and by action scenes that have a kiddie Indiana Jones ingenuity. I wasn't disappointed. Yet even with the bar raised high, Toy Story 3 enchanted and moved me so deeply I was flabbergasted that a digitally animated comedy about plastic playthings could have this effect."

I agree with Gleiberman on all counts. While I wasn't sure what to expect plot wise, I did hope for the same Toy Story energy, signature laughs and dead-on portrayal of raw, human emotions. I was not disappointed.

In the film we are reunited with our favorite toys - Andy, Buzz, Jessie, Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head, Rex and more. While their owner Andy heads off to college, they are faced with an uncertain future (something we can all relate to).

As the toys find themselves in unfamiliar surroundings we are introduced to several new characters: Lots-o-Huggin Bear, Big Baby, Ken doll, and more. Disney and Pixar never cease to amaze me with their creativity and ability to bring these highly recognizable toys to life in ways that are completely true to the toys we grew up playing with. They pay special attention to every detail: the voice of the character, the size, texture and movement of the toy, and the way the toy interacts with the people and objects around it. It is simply incredible to watch.

What is truly amazing about this film (beyond the animation) is that it feels like you are watching real, human actors. These toys portray story lines and bring to life emotions that seem impossible to share through inanimate objects.

What I found inspiring was that in our current world of laptops, smart phones, mobile music players, and portable DVDs there is still a place in every child's heart for good old fashion toys. Toys that you can hug when you're sad, snuggle in close to you at night, and create wild plots and adventures for on the floor of your room.

I must admit, in the final 10 minutes of the movie I welled up quite a bit. The writers certainly know how to tug on your heart strings! I highly recommend this movie to people of all ages. You don't need to have seen the first two movies to enjoy Toy Story 3, but there are some great references you'll miss if you haven't. For those who have seen the previous two, it will feel like a warm, long overdue reunion with your closest childhood friends.

Check out the Toy Story 3 website, including their "Make Yourself A Toy" application. Check out mine below:

Without giving away too much, keep your eyes peeled for my two favorite scenes: Buzz Lightyear moonlighting as a Flamenco dancer, and all the toys holding hands at a moment where it seems they may be reaching their ultimate demise. Pack tissues!

Dining Out: Grendel's Den

Tonight I had dinner at Grendel's Den, one of the best kept secrets of greater Boston. Located in the heart of Harvard Square in Cambridge, Grendel's is a bit tricky to find if you're not in the know. The basement level bar and restaurant is tucked beneath the lavish fine dining establishment Upstairs on the Square.

Grendel's Den is literally that, a den away from the hustle and bustle of the busy, touristy square. With a crowded bar, tables packed together and dim lighting it feels like a bit of a cave. There is always a wait but it's worth every minute.

Grendel's has a great beer list (every boy that goes there loves it) and they have an unbelievable promotion where if you spend $3 or more on a drink (one beer) your food is half price between 5:00 - 7:30 pm. Every night. True story.

I love the Grendel's menu because it has a surprising number of vegetarian options. In fact, I would go so far as to say half the menu is vegetarian. Tonight we started with the appetizer special which was a portabello mushroom cap, breaded and served with melted asiago cheese. Despite the lackluster presentation, it was delicious!

For dinner I had the Mediterranean salad which came with leafy greens, roasted red peppers, white onions, tomatoes, black olives and feta cheese. It was fresh, crisp and veg-a-licious!

My dinner date had the California burger, but with a veggie burger substituted for the usual beef. She said it was the best veggie burger she has ever had! It came served with Monterrey Jack cheese, guacamole and tomato with a generous side of cole slaw (the other option was a side of potato chips).

On past trips to Grendel's I have ordered the veggie chili, the nachos, the portabello wrap, and the fondue dinner for two which includes a piping hot bowl of cheese fondue, french bread, and a salad for each diner. I am never disappointed.

Grendel's is a relaxed atmosphere with fantastic food and impossible to beat low prices. In addition to the aforementioned perks, in the nice weather there is even outdoor seating!

What are you waiting for? Go dine in the Den.

Shop: Party Plates

Nothing says summer time like frozen margaritas. I can build an entire party around just the idea of serving those icy, boozy treats. What goes best with margaritas? Mexican, but of course!

For your next Mexican fiesta you must scoop up some of these brightly colored, ingeniously designed taco plates!

There is nothing worse than building the perfect taco only to watch it tumble to the side and have all the delicious fixings cascade out and across your plate (or the floor, as the case may be).

Order the plates here and crunch away! Ole!

Dining Out: Devlin's

Tonight I had dinner with one of my favorite girls at Devlin's in Brighton Center. Its hard for me to believe I've never blogged about Devlin's before because I have been eating there for years! Not only for the past two years since I moved to Brighton, but since the fall of 2006 when one of my best college girlfriends moved to the neighborhood.

Devlin's is located on Washington Street in the heart of Brighton Center. Inside the space is divided into two separate sides, the restaurant and the bar. The restaurant side has its own full bar, tables and cozy booths. The bar side has small 2-4 person tables, a few high top tables and on the weekends, a DJ.

I frequent Devlin's year round, but my favorite time to eat there is in the summer months when they open their outdoor patio. There is no way you could see from the street that Devlin's has outdoor seating. You have to either walk through the bar and outside, or down an unassuming alley to find the outdoor oasis.

The patio is extremely spacious, has a full bar with flat panel TVs, several tables, umbrellas, outdoor heaters, and a few tables that are beneath a flower covered trellis. When the sun goes down, the strings of outdoor party lights come on providing a calming and beautiful ambiance. The patio is an excellent date spot.

When we arrived tonight there was no wait (always a plus) and we were seated at a table right next to the bar with a perfect view of the Red Sox game. The bartender was our waiter for the evening and was surprisingly attentive, given he was the only bartender on the patio. After taking our orders, he brought us a basket of doughy foccacia bread with hummus and olive oil.

We started with an order of nachos, a Devlin's must! Its the perfect size for two people with tri-colored tortilla chips, generous scoops of salsa, guacamole and sour cream, cheese, beans and jalapenos.

For dinner I ordered the arugula salad which is served with pears, pecans and blue cheese.

My dinner date ordered the salmon which was topped with a corn salsa and served over a bed of asparagus. The plate was a vibrant color and exactly the right portion size.

We ended the night with a raspberry mojito and a glass of white sangria. The atmosphere on the patio is so relaxing. The staff never rushes you or tries to turn over the tables.

Devlin's is owned by the same restaurant group that owns Orleans in Davis Square and Barlows in South Boston. Devlin's has recently updated their menu to include several items from the Barlow's menu (I noticed the veggie burger with tzatiki sauce right away). Not to worry, they seem to have only added, not taken away any of the old favorites.

While most of Brighton Center is geared toward the young, Boston College crowd, Devlin's is the one, upscale retreat in the neighborhood. Its the type of place you go for a special occasion, with out of town guests or when your parents come to visit.

Who says we can't keep it classy on this side of the river?

The Bachelorette: Guard And Protect Your Heart

Tonight my Bachelorette viewing buddy and I were reunited to watch this week's episode of Ali's journey to find love. Below our thoughts, musings and horror:

- Ali gets made over by InStyle. Why are there camera flash bulbs? Ali says, “Let’s get me in style!” Hello00000, scripted!

- Why is Ali having a photo shoot?

- Chris L. explaining the difference between real love and unicorn love = priceless.

- Kasey compares Ali to a cocoon turning into a butterfly, ready for love. Gag.

- Kasey breaks into song. I covered my face in shame. Silence. Cut to commercial.

- Group date for the All Star crew. No invite for Rated R because he didn’t feel the need to shave.

- When did “guard and protect your heart” become a catch phrase?

- “This is just my heart. Jump in, stay awhile.” - Kasey. Nuf said.

- And Kasey is singing again. From the couch, "He is vom-a-licious."

- Group date: Kirk, Frank, Ty, Roberto, Jesse, Weatherman, Craig. Solid group!

- Product placement overload: first InStyle, now the Lion King (like Ali knows how many Tony’s they won).

- Boys in blank spandex, doing Broadway choreography? Frightening.

- Singing auditions. From the couch, "Good thing Kasey isn’t on this date.”

- Jesse can sing? Hotness times 10 million.

- “Roberto looked her in the eyes and sang to her. That’s the first thing I should have thought of!” – Kirk

- Frank gets jealous of Ali and Roberto. From the couch, "Frank is going to commit homicide on this series."

- Ali not giving out roses this episode. No rose for Kasey, no rose on the group date.

- Kirk tucks Ali in because she is feeling sick. From the couch, "Well done, Kirk."

- The second one-on-one date goes to Chris L. Woot!

- Chris brings Ali flowers and soup to her room since she still isn't feeling well.

- Ali gets some energy back and she and Chris head to 230 5th, where I was this past Friday night! Chris gets the rose. Joshua Radin performs on the roof. They finally have a make out.

- Cocktail party time. Ali's black jumpsuit - GROSS.

- Kasey was about to show Ali his tattoo when he got saved by Frank! You are lucky Kasey. That would have been the final nail.

- Craig gets a rose. From the couch, “I guess he just needs to say two sentences each week and he’ll be fine.”

- Chris N. gets a rose. From the couch, “What? No. I don’t believe in this. Chris "N" like "Nobody knows him!"

- Ali picks Kasey over Jesse and the Weatherman. You are letting the hotness that is Jesse go home to keep Mr. Guard and Protect Your Heart? COME ON.

- Next stop: Iceland! Cute preview of a one-on-one date with Kirk. He is becoming a fast favorite.

We agreed tonight we would like to fast forward to the final four: Roberto, Chris L., Kirk and Frank. Sorry boys, the front runners are clear.

Be sure to check out Entertainment Weekly for the episode recap and host Chris Harrison's blog!
